Both Feet Out: Jonathan Morrison's Life After the Dark

Content creator Jonathan Morrison lost his voice, his career, and nearly everything else to a severe shingles outbreak. What brought him back was a Blair upper cervical correction and two years of slow, hard healing he documented every step of the way.

When Jonathan Morrison first came to Well Connected, he was barely functional. He could not speak clearly. He wrote me a letter because the words would not come out loud. He spent a year playing games with himself just to make it to the end of the day.

That was Part One.

This is Part Two. And it looks completely different.

Both Feet Out

Jonathan described the last two years in a way I want to write down and keep: 2023 to most of 2024 felt like having both feet in the doors of hell. Then 2024 to 2025 was getting one foot out. And now, finally, both feet are out.

That is not a small thing to say. And it is not a small thing to hear from someone I watched inch his way back from a place most people cannot imagine.

What changed? Reps. That is the short answer. His nervous system has had two years of consistent, quality input: Blair upper cervical corrections holding, PEMF, laser, hyperbaric oxygen, supplements, diet, training. None of those other pieces would have done what they did without the structural foundation in place first. He says that himself and I appreciate him saying it, because it is true and it matters.

But the reps were not just physical. They were mental, emotional, relational. Every day he showed up and did the work, even when the recovery was slow. Even when a project that should take two weeks took two weeks plus another week of recovery. He kept going. And now the recovery is there. The capacity is back.

The Guitar That Just Sat There

There is a detail from our early sessions that I have thought about many times. Jonathan used to bring his guitar to the office. And it would just sit there. He wanted to play it. His hands and his brain were not connecting the way they used to. He could not make it work.

There is a particular kind of grief in not being able to access something that used to be second nature. He had to relearn. There were delays between the intention and the movement. There were moments of frustration that I imagine were profound.

By the time we recorded this episode, he was not just playing again. He and a friend had written a song, set a deadline around a major film release, and were working toward getting movie-grade costumes made to go with it. He was making music. He was creating. He was excited.

That guitar is no longer just sitting there.

The Brain Blue Screen

Jonathan used a metaphor in this conversation that I thought was perfect. He said it felt like his brain had blue screened. A Windows reference, which he was proud I understood. A complete system crash with a forced restart.

He was honest that some things may never return to exactly what they were. There is permanent scarring in his eye from the shingles. There are aspects of the experience he will always carry. He does not pretend otherwise.

But in other areas, he said something remarkable: he feels like he is at 110%. Not despite what happened, but in some ways because of it. The forced reset cleared things that had been running in the background for years. The seriousness with which he now approaches his health, his diet, his training, his nervous system, has produced a version of himself that is operating better in many ways than the one who got sick.

He would not have chosen the path. But he can see what it built.

What Two Years Built in Both of Us

I want to say something that I do not always say out loud: Jonathan's case made me better.

When I had to explain to him, in the fog of his worst days, exactly what was happening and why, and have it actually land clearly enough to give him hope, it sharpened every clinical communication skill I have. Now when I sit down with a new patient who is scared and confused and has been dismissed by every other provider they have seen, I know how to tell the story in a way that makes sense. Jonathan put in the reps with me too. And I am grateful.

He also said something about the practice that I want to honor directly: he never felt the business pressure. He never felt pushed to come in more than he needed to. He came in three and four times a week in the acute phase because that was what his body needed. As he got better, the visits spread out. Now he comes when he needs it. And that is exactly right.

Dr. Blair is notably quoted as saying: when you take care of the patient and what their needs are, you will be rewarded bountifully. That is the only way I know how to practice. My heart on that table is not about paying the bills. It is about what the nervous system needs today to move this person closer to the life they are supposed to be living.

I have been rewarded bountifully. Jonathan is part of that.

The Avengers Group

One of the things Jonathan said that I loved is that finding me opened a network for him: a neuro-optometrist, a physical therapist, a neurosurgeon, practitioners who may not have known Blair was even a thing. He described the group of practitioners around him as an Avengers team.

I feel the same way. I am incredibly fortunate to work alongside providers who fill in the pieces I cannot. Hyperbaric oxygen came to Well Connected because I had a concussion, benefited from HBOT in a friend's garage, and thought: every patient should have access to this. Now they do. That is the collaborative, whole-person model. Blair is the foundation. Everything else gets to be enhanced because of it.

Move the Needle a Little Every Day

Jonathan closed with something from Kobe Bryant that I want to leave every patient reading this with: move the needle a little bit every day. Even if it is small. That is all that matters.

There are going to be days where it goes back. There are going to be setbacks that have nothing to do with how hard you are working. You will crunched ribs like Jonathan did and need to come back in. Life keeps lifeing. That is not failure. That is life.

What matters is the direction. And the direction, for Jonathan Morrison, is clearly and irreversibly forward.

Both feet out. Just getting started.
