Stand And Fight

Professional MMA fighter Ali crawled into Well Connected Chiropractic unable to stand, sit, or sleep after a severe disc herniation, and walked out two weeks later completely pain-free after a single Blair upper cervical correction he's still holding five years later.

I have had a lot of memorable first visits in my career. Ali's is near the top of the list.

He didn't walk into my office. He crawled.

He had been a professional mixed martial artist and personal trainer, someone who had torn cartilage between his ribs, blown out shoulders and knees, and absorbed the kind of physical punishment most people can't imagine. He had been through it all without flinching. But this injury, a severe herniated disc, was different. This one put him on the floor.

For three or four days before he found me, he couldn't sleep on his back. Couldn't sleep on his side. Couldn't stand. Couldn't sit. The only relief he got was lying belly-down on a cone of pillows and blankets, or submerged in a friend's jacuzzi. That was it.

When he finally made it to my office, he was in so much pain he couldn't even answer my intake questions. He was trying to hold it together and he couldn't. I looked at him and said: forget the paperwork. Get on the table.

A Jesus Moment

I couldn't get Ali into the X-ray chair to take neck imaging. He couldn't sit. So I had him lie on his back and did a low back traction adjustment just to get him to the point where we could do anything else at all.

He described what happened next better than I ever could: he heard two clicks, felt my hands at the top of his hip, and then I told him to stand up.

"It was like a Jesus moment," he said. "I was like, whoa."

He had been bent like a candy cane when he came in. He stood up straight.

The disc was still herniated. I want to be clear about that. The structural injury didn't vanish in an instant. But when the nervous system is freed up to do its job and the body is no longer fighting itself, the difference in how a person feels can be immediate and dramatic. Within two weeks, Ali was completely pain-free.

Five years later, he has never needed another Blair upper cervical correction.

What He Thought His Life Was Going to Look Like

I want to sit with what Ali was facing in those three or four days before he found me, because I think it's important to understand what this kind of injury does to a person who has built their entire life around their body.

Ali made his living training. Martial arts, personal training, movement. That was how he ate, how he provided, how he showed up in the world. And lying on the floor unable to stand, staring down the possibility that his body might never come back from this, he genuinely believed he had hit the end of the road.

"I thought this is going to be my life," he said. "I literally destroyed my body enough to where it just gave up."

That fear, the fear that your body is done, that the thing you counted on most has finally quit on you, is one of the most destabilizing experiences a person can have. I have seen it in fighters and in grandmothers alike. Pain at that level doesn't just hurt. It takes your future from you, at least temporarily.

The fact that Ali came out the other side of that, healed, still competing, still training 20-year-olds at 35 years old, is a testament to what becomes possible when the root issue is actually addressed.

Still Beating Up 20-Year-Olds at 35

I love how Ali describes his life now. He is not subtle about it.

He is 6'1", 240 pounds, 35 years old, and still competing in mixed martial arts alongside athletes who are half his age and using performance-enhancing drugs. He is keeping up with them. He is beating them. His spine is working in ways, he says, that a man his size probably shouldn't be capable of.

His secret? Vegetables and Blair chiropractic. That is genuinely what he said, and I believe him completely.

There is something powerful about knowing that your body has a reliable foundation. It changes the way you train, the way you recover, and the way you approach physical challenges. Ali said it perfectly: he has confidence in his body because he knows where to go when something needs attention. That knowledge, knowing that help exists and that it works, changes everything about how you inhabit your body.

What He'd Tell a Skeptic

When I asked Ali what he would say to someone who was skeptical about chiropractic, he didn't mince words. He also gave one of the best layman's explanations of why this work matters that I have ever heard.

He said: your central nervous system is the center of everything. It makes everything run. If the lines aren't lined up, if the signals aren't sparking correctly, nothing downstream is going to work right. Get adjusted. Cold? Get adjusted. Depression? Try getting adjusted. A lot of issues people are walking around with start from a nervous system that isn't firing the way it's supposed to.

He's right. And hearing it said in plain, direct language from someone who has lived it lands differently than hearing it from me.

I also shared something with Ali in this conversation that I don't always say out loud: I became a Blair chiropractor not because I had neck pain or a bad back. I became one because I had depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. And a Blair correction healed me. That is why I have spent my career doing this work, teaching it, and trying to give hope back to people who had stopped believing it was possible.

Structure dictates function. When your body is aligned, it can heal itself the way it was designed to. That is not a theory. That is what I have watched happen in my office, over and over again, for years.

The Dark Tunnel

When I asked Ali what it means to him to live his life in alignment, he described what it felt like to be in the depths of that herniated disc, and what it felt like when it changed.

"It's like you're in a really dark tunnel," he said. "And then it just does that. There's the end of the tunnel. I can go out now."

I had never heard it put quite like that before. And it's perfect. Because that is exactly what it is for so many people who walk through my door. They have been in the dark for a long time. They have tried things. They have lost hope. And then something shifts, and there is light at the end, and they start moving toward it.

Ali is out of the tunnel. Has been for five years. And he will be the first person to tell you: whatever it takes to get here, it is worth it.
