Maria Aparis came to this work the way so many of the best teachers do: through suffering. Not a little suffering. Five years of it, moving from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, naturopath to naturopath, taking 80 different supplements at once, spending thousands of dollars, and getting worse with each new protocol.
And then she stopped listening to everyone else and started listening to herself.
What she found led her to write The Essential Gut Awakening: Mastering Hashimoto's and Other Autoimmune Diseases, and to build a mentoring practice that helps people with autoimmune conditions find the same ground she found. I had her on the podcast because her story is one I wanted my patients and listeners to hear, and because what she has discovered about the gut, the nervous system, and the body's innate ability to heal maps directly onto what I believe and what I practice every day.
The Most Expensive Urine Ever
Here is the core insight that changed everything for Maria, and it is so simple that it almost sounds too obvious: you cannot heal what you cannot absorb.
When her Hashimoto's was at its worst, her gut was in a state of significant compromise. Leaky gut syndrome was preventing her body from properly absorbing nutrients, which meant that every supplement she was taking, no matter how high quality, was essentially passing through her without doing its job. She was, in her words, producing the most expensive urine ever.
The answer was not more supplements. It was healing the gut first so that what she put in could actually get where it needed to go.
She began with essential oils, specifically because their small molecular size allows them to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream in a way that larger supplement molecules cannot match. From there she discovered the importance of phytocannabinoids, what she calls hemp oil, and their relationship to the endocannabinoid system, which had been seriously depleted in her body. Within days of starting a nano-enhanced, liposomal delivery form of hemp oil, she felt what she described as getting her life back.
She also eliminated nightshades, which carry their own natural defense compounds that can irritate an already compromised gut lining. Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers. And dairy, including eggs. Not because these foods are inherently bad, but because for a body in her particular state, they were actively working against healing.
The brain fog lifted. The energy came back. The clarity returned.
The Gut Talks to the Brain
Here is where her story and mine intersect in a way I find remarkable.
Maria discovered that the enteric nervous system, the nervous system of the gut, contains more neurons than the central nervous system. And 80% of the communication traveling through the vagus nerve is going from the gut up to the brain, not the other way around.
I think about this in relation to what I do every single day: the vagus nerve passes directly through the upper cervical spine. When C1 and C2 are misaligned, that communication pathway is compromised. The gut and the brain cannot talk to each other properly. The body cannot regulate itself. And no amount of supplements, no matter how well absorbed, can fully compensate for a nervous system that is working with interference at the top of the line.
When the upper cervical spine is aligned and the vagus nerve can do its job, everything downstream, including gut function, hormonal regulation, immune response, has a better chance of operating the way it was designed to. Structure and gut health are not separate conversations. They are the same conversation.
Intuition as a Guidance System
One of the threads running through this entire conversation is the word intuition, and I want to spend a moment on it because Maria connects it to something most people have never considered.
She describes the pineal gland as our direct connection to intuition, what some traditions call the third eye, our internal compass. When the body is toxic, when leaky gut is flooding the bloodstream with things that should not be there, those toxins reach the pineal gland. There is no blood-brain barrier protecting it. And when the pineal gland is calcified or compromised, the ability to access that quiet inner knowing is diminished.
This is why, she says, five years of listening to practitioners was not working. Her internal guidance system was offline. It was not until her body began to detoxify, until her gut began to heal, until her system started clearing, that she could access the clarity she needed to find her own way.
I think about the patients who come to me after years of trying everything and feeling lost. Their nervous systems are compromised. Their signals are scrambled. And sometimes the most important thing that happens in a Blair upper cervical correction is not just the structural change. It is the quiet that follows when the body finally gets a chance to hear itself again.
Science, Eastern Philosophy, and Energy
Maria's framework is beautifully integrated and she names it directly: she is marrying Western medicine science, Eastern philosophy, and quantum physics of mindset and energy. All three legs are necessary. None of them alone is sufficient.
She is a Kundalini yoga teacher. She uses mantra, essential oils, hemp oil, gut detoxification, clean eating, and Reiki in her work with clients. She does not present these as alternatives to getting a diagnosis or working with a physician. She presents them as the fuller picture that a diagnosis alone cannot provide.
I said something in this conversation that reflects my philosophy exactly: chiropractic is science, art, and philosophy. What Maria described maps onto that perfectly. We are not choosing between these frameworks. We are combining them, because the body is not just a machine and it does not respond to only one kind of medicine.
The Goal Is to Make Yourself Unnecessary
Something Maria said that I completely identify with: she does not want clients coming to her years and years from now working on the same issue. Her goal is to give people tools, build their capacity, and send them off to thrive. She calls herself a mentor and a guide, not a dependency.
That is exactly how I practice. The better you do, the less I need to see you. I want your Blair correction to hold. I want your nervous system to function so well that your maintenance visits are genuinely maintenance, not crisis management. I want to teach you to read your own body.
There are practitioners who believe in high-frequency, long-term adjusting forever. That is their philosophy. Mine is: get your head on straight, hold it, thrive. Check in. Keep improving. But not as a dependency. As a practice of health.

If you have been living with an autoimmune condition and feel like you have tried everything, I would encourage you to listen to this episode in full. And I would encourage you to consider that the missing piece might not be another supplement. It might be absorption. It might be your nervous system. It might be your gut finally getting the environment it needs to do what it was always designed to do.
The body wants to heal. It is always working toward that. Our job is to stop getting in the way.
