The Blair Chiropractic Technique Can Treat A Herniated Disc

What is a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc is when the cushion-like disc between two vertebrae bulges or ruptures. These discs are filled with a gelatinous substance and cushion the vertebrae, but when the gel is displaced or spills out it can result in a great deal of back pain.
A herniated disc can be the result of an injury or trauma, or it may be due to long-term repetitive movements that wear down the discs.
Signs and Symptoms of a Herniated Disc
It is often hard to tell when a herniated disc is at the root of back pain. In addition to back pain, those who suffer from this condition may experience muscle weakness or numbness and tingling in the extremities. Pain may worsen and become sharp or shooting when the body is jarred, such as when sneezing or coughing. Sitting in certain positions can aggravate the pain, and when walking the gait may become awkward.
A herniated disc, when untreated, can worsen and affect fine motor abilities. It may cause headaches or lead to other conditions, such as sciatica or damaged nerve roots.
How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects a Herniated Disc
If the vertebrae are not properly aligned, it can put undue stress and pressure on the discs. This can happen anywhere on the spine, but upper cervical spine misalignments are more serious. The upper cervical spine starts at the base of the skull and runs down the neck into the lower back. It is responsible for holding up the head, supporting the skull, and protecting large clusters of nerves that run from the brain down into the spinal cord.
A herniated disc in the upper cervical spine can cause long-term problems by disrupting the flow of impulses from the brain to other parts of the body. These signals control all of the body’s major functions, so when impeded they cause a domino effect of problems.
How Our Herniated Disc Treatment Works
To treat the pain and other health issues that may arise from a herniated disc, the root of the problem needs to be corrected. That is, the misalignment in the upper cervical spine must be addressed.
Dr. Elizabeth Hoefer of the Well Connected Chiropractic uses the Blair Chiropractic Technique to help gently but effectively correct misalignments of the upper cervical spine. Dr. Hoefer uses advanced diagnostic tools to locate misalignments and then perform a series of manipulations to bring the vertebrae back into proper alignment.
Once aligned, the body’s proper functions can resume and the body can begin to heal from a herniated disc.
